Compare Word Documents

Select two Word documents (.docx or .doc) and instantly see every difference, side by side. Added, removed, and changed text is highlighted in color — paragraph by paragraph and word by word — entirely in your browser.

Key Features

Side-by-Side Compare

See the original and modified documents (.docx or .doc) next to each other, with every difference aligned on the same row.

Word-Level Highlighting

Changed paragraphs are diffed word by word, so you can pinpoint exactly which words were added or removed.

Added, Removed & Changed

Green marks new text, red marks deleted text, and amber marks edited paragraphs — a glance tells you what happened.

Tables & Headings Included

Text inside tables, headings, and every paragraph is extracted in reading order, so nothing is missed.

100% Local & Private

The comparison runs entirely in your browser. Your documents are never uploaded to any server.

Free & No Sign-Up

No account, no install, no limits. Compare as many document pairs as you like.

About the Word Document Diff Tool

The Word document comparison tool extracts the text of two .docx or .doc files (legacy .doc files are converted to .docx in your browser first) and aligns the two versions paragraph by paragraph, then word by word within each changed paragraph. The result is a color-coded side-by-side view where green marks content added in the modified version, red marks content removed from the original, and amber marks paragraphs that were edited. Everything runs locally in your browser — your documents never leave your device. The tool handles text inside tables and headings, skips field codes and tracked deletions, and works on documents of any length.

How to Compare Two Word Documents

Comparing two Word documents takes three simple steps:

1

Add the Original File

Drag and drop (or browse for) the original .docx or .doc file into the first slot.

2

Add the Modified File

Drop the edited .docx or .doc into the second slot — the comparison starts automatically.

3

Read the Differences

Scan the side-by-side view. Green is added, red is removed, amber is changed. Use Swap to reverse the two versions.

Good to Know

This tool compares the text content of .docx and .doc files. Formatting changes (fonts, colors, spacing) are not shown — only the actual text differences. .doc files are converted to .docx in your browser before comparing. For .odt or .rtf files, convert them to .docx first (for example with the free ODT to DOCX converter), then compare. The comparison runs entirely in your browser, so your documents never leave your device.
