What Is a PDF Table of Contents?

A table of contents is a page that lists a document's chapters and sections with their page numbers, letting readers see the structure at a glance and jump to any part. Many PDFs already contain bookmarks — the navigation outline shown in the sidebar of PDF readers. This tool reads those bookmarks and lays them out as a formatted, clickable table of contents page at the front of the document, with dotted leaders and page numbers. It can also keep the entries as PDF bookmarks so the sidebar navigation is preserved.

How to Create a PDF Table of Contents

Creating a table of contents takes just a few steps. Everything runs in your browser.

1

Upload a PDF with bookmarks

Upload a PDF that contains bookmarks (usually created by Word, LaTeX, or an editor). The bookmarks are read automatically.

2

Choose the style

Set the TOC title, font size, and font family. Enable bookmarks if you want the entries to appear in the PDF sidebar.

3

Check the preview

Review the generated layout in the preview panel, including how many TOC pages will be created.

4

Generate and download

Click Generate Table of Contents and download the PDF with the clickable TOC at the front.

Good to Know

The table of contents is built from the bookmarks already stored in your PDF — documents without bookmarks cannot be processed. Encrypted PDFs must be unlocked first. Long tables of contents automatically span multiple pages. Page numbers shown in the TOC refer to the page position after the TOC is inserted. The original content and quality are preserved unchanged.
