What Is PDF Sanitization?
Sanitizing a PDF removes content that is not needed for reading but could be risky, hidden, or unwanted. This includes JavaScript that can run when the file is opened, embedded file attachments, external links that point to websites, fillable form fields that may carry data, document metadata such as author and creation history, and annotations. Cleaning a document before sharing is good practice for privacy and security, especially when sending files to people you do not fully trust. The visible pages and their quality are preserved.

Good to Know
Encrypted PDFs must be decrypted before sanitizing. Sanitization preserves the visible pages and their quality, but it removes the selected hidden content — so links and form functionality may stop working. Removing annotations also removes highlights, comments, and sticky notes. If nothing is listed as removed, your PDF did not contain the selected content. Only sanitize files you own or have permission to modify.
